Another work I enjoyed in Audiobook form, this one from LibriVox — Oscar Wilde comfortably belongs to the public domain, after all. Most of the voice actors were quite good, especially given the fact that most, if not all, of them were amateurs. As always, however, no measure of generalisation can capture the full spectrum of reality; some of the actors were bored with the text and were yawn-inspiring and others were very much into their role. By the end it was impossible for me to disconnect those actors’ voices from their respective characters!

So, what about The Importance of Being Earnest as a script, as a work by the great Oscar Wilde? It’s a fairly standard play. I mean that in the sense that everything falls into place by the end, it has a first, second and third act, all clearly defined. The characters are as delightfully unrealistic as they perfectly working symbols of late 19th century upper-class England. Even the surprises of the plot are carefully measured, predictably unpredictable. That said, it’s excellent insofar as standard, classic plays go. It’s rather a lot like → Read It All

I… um… “enjoyed” The Power of Now in audiobook form — difficult choice of words here because “read” would be a lie and “listened to” would make it Power of Now sound like a song. I guess audiobooks need their own transitive verb now. Anyway.

Audiobooks have their strengths and weaknesses, obviously. I had the pleasure to enjoy the Power of Now as I was exploring a part of my city that had long been invitingly mysterious and still. The setting reinforced the listening and vice versa. The experience would have certainly been very different had I visually read the book in that jungle of reed. Those hours of exploration are now inseperably interwoven with the listening in my mind. I touched the Power of Now as described in the book while I was there; my attention was not in the past, nor in the future, it was squarely focused on my ears and eyes. I didn’t finish it during that exploration, however, and most of my subsequent listenings were rife with inattention. I thus have problems now remembering which parts → Read It All

Η μεγαλύτερη αλήθεια αυτών των εκλογών δεν αναφέρεται από πολλούς, μάλλον το σοκ είναι ακόμα υπερβολικά μεγάλο:

35% η αποχή. Από αυτό το υπόλοιπο 65%, το 18% ψήφισαν το πρώτο κόμμα και το 19% δεν αντιπροσωπεύονται στην βουλή. Με άλλα λόγια: μόνο το 12% του ελληνικού λαού, αν αφαιρέσουμε την αποχή, θέλει ΝΔ. Ένα 12% και κάτι παραπάνω θέλει κάτι που κανείς δεν ακούει, είτε αυτό είναι Οικολόγοι, είτε αυτό είναι ΛΑΟΣ, είτε αυτό είναι Καζάκης, είτε είναι Τζήμερος, Πειρατές ή ΚΚΕ (μ-λ). 35+19*0,65 = 47% Αν υπολογίσουμε και τα λευκά άκυρα, (περίπου 2,5%), η διαφορά είναι οριακή ανάμεσα σε αυτούς που ψήφισαμε κάτι που είναι στην βουλή αυτή την στιγμή και σε αυτούς που δεν έχουμε αντιπροσώπευση.

Μάλιστα, αυτό το 35% του πληθυσμού που δεν ψήφισε καν έχω την εντύπωση πωςγια πρώτη φορά έχει μεγαλύτερο ποσοστό από το πρώτο κόμμα — όχι, όχι, όχι: έχει μεγαλύτερο ποσοστό από το ΠΑΣΟΚ και την ΝΔ ΜΑΖΙ!! Και δεν σταματάμε εδώ· μολίς και μετα βίας τα συγκεντρωτικά ποσοστά του ΠΑΣΟΚ, της ΝΔ, του ΣΥΡΙΖΑ και των Ανεξάρτητων Ελλήνων (~38%) ξεπερνάνε τα ποσοστά αποχής. Στις προηγούμενες εκλογές ο Γιωργάκης είχε 43% και ο Κωστάκης 33% και η αποχή ήταν → Read It All

Το ΠΑΣΟΚ θα το ψηφίσει ένα σεβαστό ποσοστό συνανθρώπων μας. Τι πρέπει να τους κάνουμε αυτούς; Πού να τους στείλουμε; Μήπως και αυτούς σε κανένα «κέντρο φιλοξενίας» μέχρι να τους πάρουν κυβερνησείς από άλλα κρατή που σε λίγο θα καταφτάσει το ΔΝΤ και σία για να τους κάνουν την ζωή πιο εύκολη;

Αν και, για να είμαι 100% ειλικρινής, δεν είμαι σίγουρος ότι είναι πολλοί τελικά. Ρίχτε μια ματιά στην διαφορά των παρακάτω βίντεο.

Ανάβοντας εγκαταλειμμένες συνάψεις…→ Read It All

I understand that Facebook has this idea that people should have a way to show off their complete personal history and past achievements. It’s a fairly natural expansion to what their modus operandi has been thus far.

The very notion of having a version of the past to which you can add anything and everything you like, quietly shoving under the carpet ignoring the things that do not go that well with your timeline, fits perfectly with how Facebook has evolved into this kitsch (I really like using this word lately) personal shrine of  admiration each and every one of us has erected to ourselves. I assume readers are on facebook, of course; pardon me if you remain one of those shining beacons of exception and keep in mind that you have made a new friend; not on Facebook of course, but in this case, for a change, it shouldn’t matter.

I was shocked when Facebook announced to me almost a week ago that I had 7 days to prepare my profile before they would be imposing Timeline on it. I put a pretty cover photo. That’s about all I did to it.
